Even a simple desk lamp may seem like a complicated model when you examine every curve, screw, fastener, hinge, and edge simultaneously. In CAD, however, the lamp isn’t a single complex object. It comprises a series of simpler forms: a circular plate base, a slim arm, a cylindrical connector, and a slender shade. Seeing this simplified geometry before you open your modeling software can lead to a more efficient design process, helping you avoid unnecessary features.
First, ignore the surface geometry and think about what gives the object most of its volume. You could consider a bracket as a rectangular block that’s missing part of its geometry. Think of a handle as a shape that revolves around a centerline. A box, or enclosure, might be modeled as a simple solid that you subtract, add shell elements, cut, round, and fillet. You can think of this as your main volume. It provides the gross volume, dimensions, and mass before you add holes, slots, chamfers, or rounds.
Looking at the part from the front, side, and top views will make your interpretation easier. A feature that seems to be circular from a front view might actually be a cylinder from a side view. An angled surface might be a cut through a rectangular body. Look for signs of symmetry, repeated features, centerlines, and section thickness changes. Your reference images can hint at whether your part should be modeled with extrusions, revolves, or other combined solid bodies.
Take a common object like a plug, handle, clamp, or bottle cap. Look at it on your work table and sketch only the largest elements in your sketchbook. Don’t draw the fine detail, threads, seams, surface textures, or edge treatments. Identify a likely axis, profile, and cut. Then describe a construction sequence in a single line: extrude the base, add the raised portion, cut the keyway, place the pair of holes, and finally the small fillets. You don’t have to get it right. The purpose is to eliminate decisions once your feature tree gets too long.
A common mistake is to model the most prominent feature first. Details such as a molded grip or a decorative recess are obvious, but they rely on the main dimensions that the primary body defines. If those are modified, the feature will become incorrect or misaligned. Start by building your main part as simply as possible. View the body from orthographic projections. Ensure that the volume proportions are approximately correct, and that your main body has the right shape, thickness, and symmetry. Then, build in the remaining features.
You can verify your feature order by changing one of the key parameters such as the base width or the diameter of the revolve profile. Check which downstream features are affected and if the model still builds. A robust sequence is an indication that your modeler understands the basic shape of the item. You’ll know your skills are improving when you look at a new product or mechanical component and can break it down into shapes, solids, cutaways, axes, and repeated elements in your head before your mouse even moves.
